All health and social care workers can expect to be engaged in some form of health education as part of their role. Sometimes this is informal and sometimes it forms part of a more structured health education campaign. It is therefore helpful for you to understand the different approaches that can be taken to successfully deliver a programme of health education. This assignment tests your understanding of these approaches and enables you to consider the steps you need to take when planning your own health campaign.
Health education can help prevent illness and disease from occurring in the first place or it can help people to recover from an illness or disease quicker or more effectively. Where a person has a long-term condition health education can help to prevent the situation from becoming worse.
This assignment involves you in developing a plan for a small scale health education campaign. You should begin by identifying a health related issue that you believe would benefit from health education. Once you have identified your health issue you need to carry out the following assessment tasks. You may like to consider the health related topic you chose in Unit 22 (Research Methodology) and develop this knowledge into a health education campaign for the following 2 assignments.

1). Explain three different approaches to health education (P1)
In your written statement, you will need to explain the key features of the following 3 health education approaches (P1)
Include the following:
Social marketing approach: marketing mix; benefits, e.g. audience analysis and segmentation, needs-led, targeted approach; limitations, e.g. cost, time
Role of mass media: different forms, e.g. television, radio, newspapers, magazines, posters, billboard displays, leaflets; benefits, e.g. raising consciousness about health issues, reaching large audience, conveying simple information, placing health on the public agenda; limitations, e.g. inability to convey complex information or teach skills, less specific information, limited two-way communication
Community development approach: holistic concept; participation, empowerment, benefits, e.g. focuses on root causes of ill health, helps to reduce inequalities; limitations e.g. time-consuming, difficult to quantify and evaluate.

2). Explain two models of behaviour change that have been used in recent national health education campaigns. (P2). Assess how the social context may influence the ability of health education campaigns to change behaviour in relation to health. (M1)
Choose two different models of behaviour change and state the name of each.
Explain (P2) and assess (M1) the key features of each model and relate to recent national health campaigns. To achieve the merit, you will need to consider how the social context can influence the ability of health education campaigns to change behaviour.

Models: The Health Belief Model, Theory of Reasoned Action, Theory of Planned Behaviour, Stages of Change Model’ & Social Learning Theory
Social and economic context: you will need to consider the importance of financial, social class and peer pressure considerations. These are just a few suggestions to get you started but there many other considerations you may like to include in your answer as well.

1). Explain how to plan a small-scale health education campaign relevant to local or national health strategies (P3). Justify the proposed approaches and methods in your health education campaign, relate them to models of behaviour change (D1)
You will need to develop a plan for a small-scale health education campaign. Use your work from P1, P2 and M1 to help you with the P3 and D1 criteria.
You should begin by identifying a health related. Start by developing an outline plan. Draft out a project outline for your campaign and describe how you would go about putting the plan into practice, i.e. describe the process of delivering the campaign.
When you plan your campaign you must show evidence of your planning as well as describing what you did.
Which health education approaches and methods have you used in your campaign?
Use the following key words to help you plan effectively:
Health strategies: campaigns, e.g. Saving Lives: Our Healthier Nation, Every Child Matters, Choosing Health; Making healthy choices easier, appropriate for home country; the role of legislation, as relevant to all aspects of health,
Design principles: importance of health policy, information gathering/ statistics, target setting, objectives that are specific, measurable, realistic and acknowledge starting point of audience, approach chosen, clear and accurate information communicated appropriately, misinformation and prejudice challenged and corrected, consult with appropriate agencies/ organisations/ people, links to national campaigns, obtaining feedback from participants
Resources: You may like to consider types of paper based resources, e.g. patient information leaflets, podcasts, moving images, paper-based an interactive games /crosswords etc, three-dimensional models, e.g. the heart, lungs etc, activities e.g. drama; ICT- e.g.an enabled online quiz
Explain how your small scale health education project is relevant to local, national or national health education targets and strategies.
2). Carry out a health education campaign, relating it to models of behaviour change (P4). Assess factors that influenced the effectiveness of your health campaign (M2) Make recommendations for improving their health education campaign (D2).
How will you define success for your campaign? How will you know you have been successful and what evidence would you need to collect to prove this to someone else?
To achieve the merit, when carrying out your campaign you will need to make an overall assessment of the impact it has had.
You will need to include the following:
Aims and objectives: improving health of individuals and society, eg by providing health- related learning, exploring values and attitudes, providing knowledge and skills for change, promoting self-esteem and self-empowerment, changing beliefs, attitudes, behaviour, lifestyle
Target audience: as appropriate, eg young children, young people, older people, pregnant mothers. Context: one to one, groups.
How will you evaluate the success of the project? What process and outcome measures will you use to measure the success? How well did you do against these measures?
Include the following:
Evaluation: success of, eg aims and objectives, targets; strengths and weaknesses; aspects to improve
3). Explain ethical issues involved in the health education campaign (P5). Discuss how ethical issues that arose were addressed (M3)

Ethical issues: you will need to consider: confidentiality, anonymity (if appropriate e.g. questionnaires, 1-2-1 interviews / advice given etc; efficacy, ensuring that the information provided is up-to-date, rights of
