Prepare a proposal of the five main developments you would include. Be specific and draw from your readings or other research to demonstrate your understanding of newfound concepts, theories, and vocabulary. Include evidence-based information and your personal analysis describing why these exhibits should be included and how they shaped the current health care system in the United States. Descriptions and analysis must use complete sentences. Format your proposal consistent with APA guidelines. health care system? ) EXAMPLE Even though the connection between filth and disease was made in the 1850s, the wider medical community still did not understand the cause of infectious diseases until much later. Germ theory was hypothesized in the 19th century in Europe; however, it was not until the 1920s that bacteria and their link with infectious diseases became mainstream knowledge in America and practical applications became integrated into health care. This knowledge led to new sanitation and hygiene measures, hand washing, sterilization in preparing surgical instruments, and ensuring clean water (Lemelson-MIT, 2003).

Once the link between germs and disease had been scientifically established, hospitals in America became a place for people to come to recover. Before the 1920s, hospitals were little more than almshouses for the poor who were sick; they provided a place of rest, food, and shelter, but according to Austin and Wetle (2012), “those who could afford home care stayed away from hospitals” (p. 93). By the 1920s, the understanding of germs and, subsequently, sanitation and sterilization of instruments changed the outcome dramatically for hospital patients.

Hospitals became places where the best and most advanced care could be offered, changing the entire dynamic of health care delivery. 1. In the 1900’s the American Medical Association (AMA), had become a very powerful national force. Also in early years the AMA reorganizes as the national organization of state and local associations. Surgery becomes more common, especially for removing tumors, appendectomies, and gynecological operations. Also in this time doctors were no longer expected to provide free medical services to hospital patients. In this time railroads was the leading industry to develop employee medical programs.

From the first start of the American Medical Association there have been many laws and rules that protect the Physicians that are associated with this group. Now the foundation provides help to students that need financial assistant. This group also funds different types of awareness projects so that people will be more health literate. AMA also supports different research funding for students in the U. S. In current days the AMA also provides grants to help with community projects so that they help promote and encourage a more healthier lifestyle.

2. The development of antibiotics was one of the greatest medical advances of the 20th century. The first antibiotic was penicillin, which was discovered by Howard Florey a Professor of Pathology at Oxford in 1935. He begins looking at a range of substances that might have an effect on bacteria. With help of a biochemist named Norman Healthy in 1940 the team solved a major problem and were now able to measure the activity of a sample of penicillin and came up with a method called back extraction to isolate the penicillin.

Then in May of 1940 the team was able to carry out a new experiment to see if the drug could be an important antibacterial drug. After many trials with penicillin there were impressive results and many companies in the U. S. and then the UK began to start the production of penicillin an industrial scale. Supplies of penicillin helped the troops in 1944 and the death toll from infected wounds during the war was dramatically reduced in comparison of other wars. Penicillin inspired massive efforts to discover many new other drugs that were able to cure many diseases that were still threading the world in general.

Antibiotics that followed were streptomycin, choramphenicol, the tetracyclines, and erythromycin. Antibiotics have seen a dramatic change in the figures for deaths and for illness from infectious diseases. They have also provided safe and effective treatments for the wide range of infections that once were daily problems in hospitals, and general practice. 3. In spring of 1972 an engineer from EMI Ltd gave a presentation at the 32nd congress of the British institute of radiology. The engineer, Godfrey Hounsfield, was giving a lecture on computerized axial tomography.

This was when he presented the CT scan for the first time. The initial test was built on the bed on an old lathe which Hounsfield had been using in a previous project working on computer store. The early test unit became referred to as the Lathe bed model. The initial utilized a gamma source, Americium 95, with a photon counter as the detector. On this rig, the source made 160 traverses of the object, which rotated 1” at the end of each traverse for a total of 180*. It took 9 days to collect sufficient information, and 2.

5 hours to reconstruct the image on an ICL 1905 mainframe computer. The CT scan has come a long way these days. Now it takes no time at all to have this kind of scan done and not long for the results as well. Technology has flew by and now CT scanning is useful way to get a very detailed 3-D image of certain parts of the body, such as soft tissues, the pelvis, blood vessels, the lungs, the brain, abdomen, and bones. Because of the advances of this test doctors are able to tell a lot about a person’s body and how it functions and ways to prevent illness as well.

A ct scan will tell the doctor whether the patient has a tumor in his or her abdomen, and whether any internal organs in that area are swollen or inflamed. It will reveal whether there are lacerations of the spleen, kidneys or liver. A ct scan can also detect abnormal tissue and it often used for planning areas for radiotherapy and biopsies. Another important function of the ct scan that has happened over the years is that it can provide valuable data on the patient’s vascular condition. With this kind of scan there has been many lives saved over the course of history. 4.

In 1965 congress created Medicare under the Title XV111 of the Social Security Act so that it would provide health insurance to people over the age of 65, regardless of their income or medical history. Before Medicare was created 65% of people over the age of 65 had health insurance with coverage often that was unavailable not affordable to the rest of the people. Medicare has been in operation over 40 years and has changed in many different ways over the years. Later on congress expanded Medicare eligibility to younger people who have permanent disabilities and that receive Social Security Disability Insurance payments.

Since the creation of Medicare, science and medicine have had many advances and technology has changed in many different ways. Since then there has also been an increased in life expectancy. The only thing that is a drawback is that Medicare faces significant financial challenges because of the rise in overall healthcare costs, increasing enrollment as the population rises. By 2030 Medicare is projected to increase from 47 million to 79 million and this could have a major impact on the United States as a whole. 5.

The Affordable Health Care for America Act or HR 3962 is a bill that was created by the United States House of Representatives in 2009. The Act was enacted with a goal of increasing the quality and the affordability of health insurance and to lower the uninsured rate by expanding public and private insurance coverage. It was designed to lower the cost of healthcare for everyone and for the government. This new law also requires that insurance companies have to cover all applicants with certain minimum standards regardless of pre existing conditions or sex.

Under this act there is guaranteed issue, minimum standards, Medicaid eligibly expanded, and also business with over 50 employees will be taxed if they don’t offer health insurance to full time employees. We don’t know the outcome of this Act yet, but it all succeeds it could have a great impact over the all around health of everyone. Since each person will have health coverage there will be a more conscious people who know what is going on with their health and know how to control it. I also think that there could be some disadvantages to this act, but only time will tell.
